How It Works

1. Choose your ticket type.

There are a couple different options in signing up for the festival:

General Registration ($20)
Required for anyone age 13 or older who would like to register for paid field trips, workshops, and evening programs.

Child Ticket (Ages 12 & Under)
Children do not pay the registration fee but will still need tickets for any fee-based activities they attend. All youth must be accompanied by an adult.

Free Events Only ($0)
This option allows you to register for free field trips and community events only. Paid activities will not be available with this ticket type.

Your registration fee helps support festival coordination, volunteer management, insurance, and the many behind-the-scenes costs that make the Monterey Bay Festival of Birds possible.

2. Select your activities.

Browse activities in the dated sections and determine what you would like to do!  You can find free activities at the top, and then by date with trips generally sorted from North to South.  Each trip has a reference number listed in the title: 100- Friday, 200- Saturday, 300- Sunday.

You'll only see activities available to your selected ticket type.

Looking for something specific?  Browse activities by region, activity type, or difficulty level using our Festival Guide.  You can also use "ctrl + F" on your keyboard to search.

3. Register each participant separately.

Please complete a separate registration for each person attending the festival.  This will also help us ensure each participant has a signed waiver to participate freely in Festival of Birds activities.

4. Complete your ticket.

Once you reach the end of the trips, you will find another chance to get a Festival TShirt and where to add payment options to complete your ticket.  If you have a discount code, you will find the spot to enter towards the bottom of the page.

  • 🔴 312 Sea Watch / Seabird Sit Spot [Sold Out]

    Date: Sunday October 11, 2026
    Time: 3pm- 5pm
    Location: Pacific Grove
Activity Level: Easy, Stationary birding with optics (can be a seated activity)

Jutting out at the extreme southwestern edge of Monterey Bay, Pinos Pinos is one of the best spots to seawatch on the West Coast. “Seawatching” is a type of birding that’s rather self-explanatory: watching the sea from land with the goal of seeing seabirds! The key to successful seawatching is a mix of geography, seasonality, weather, patience, and persistence. With the deepwater Monterey Canyon and its cold, nutrient-rich waters upwelling just offshore from Point Pinos, which is situated at the outermost tip of the Monterey Peninsula, an immense diversity of seabirds and marine mammals can be seen here throughout the year. In the fall and winter, migrating seaducks, loons, and alcids can be expected in abundance.

Strong offshore winds can push these species usually only seen by boat closer to the Point, making seawatching an accessible way to go seabirding without the price of a pelagic trip ticket or risk of seasickness. However, it can still be bitterly cold and blustery on the best seawatching days, so it’s always best to check the weather before heading out and dress comfortably for long periods of stationary birding! We’ll bring spotting scopes and binoculars to share, and will plan to remain at Pinos Pinos for the duration of the field trip, where you’ll have the opportunity to practice identifying seabirds by their flight style, behavior, and shape as they navigate the waves offshore. This event is beginner-friendly and perfect for anyone new to seawatching!

Activity Level: Moderate. Walking on uneven dirt roads.

This is a rare opportunity to bird on the historic Elkhorn Ranch private property in Moss Landing. Elkhorn Native Plant Nursery, located on the property, originally produced California native grass seed for the ranchland’s restoration. The nursery now produces seed for restoration projects throughout the area. You’ll be able to go beyond the nursery on this trip to walk the hills. Birding is superb here, since there is a freshwater pond, as well as grassy hillsides, oaks, willows, conifers, and a stunning overview of Elkhorn Slough.
